A Burrowing Owl near its nest hole near the Salton Sea in Imperial County, southern California. The Burrowing Owl is the only owl that nests in holes in the ground and has long legs adapted for a life on the ground. They are often active by day. They have a very large range that includes most of North and South America, although they are under pressure in the former because of persecution of prairie dogs (the owls share their burrows) and by relentless development. The owls tolerate agricultural use of land to some extent, nesting beside cultivated fields and along irrigation ditches.
